About Human Trafficking in the DR

Modern-day slavery still exists!  Help us to stop and prevent it!
  • Around 30,000 Haitian children are illegally smuggled into the Dominican Republic every year to work as child prostitutes or be forced into other degrading occupations, according to UN and Organization of American States (OAS) officials.
  • According to Gary Young from the Santo Domingo paper "The Guardian", there is a thriving trade in Haitian children in the Dominican Republic, where they are mostly used for domestic service, agricultural work or prostitution.  In towns on the border of Dominican Republic and Haiti, children can be purchased as slaves for less than $100USD.
  • According to International Organization for Migration, the Dominican Republic is ranked 4th in the world for exportation of prostitutes into the sex trade.  These young girls and women are most often tricked into this by luring them with offers of work abroad as a model, nanny, waitress or house maid.
  • According to Development and Peace & Anti-Slavery International, Haitian sugarcane workers are paid as low as $1.20 a day for 12-16 hour workdays and work six days a time.  These workers are experiencing modern-day slavery and debt bondage from their Dominican employers.
